York Regional Police have concluded a year-long investigation dubbed “Project Skyfall,” resulting in the arrest of 17 individuals allegedly connected to a criminal network involved in home invasions, armed robberies, and drug trafficking across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The operation also led to the seizure of more than $14 million worth of illegal drugs and multiple firearms.
How It Began
The investigation was launched following a violent home invasion on Christmas Eve 2023 in Vaughan. Three masked suspects forced their way into a residence near Forest Drive and Harmonia Crescent, holding the occupants at gunpoint and assaulting them while demanding money. A 911 call from a woman inside the home prompted officers to arrive before the suspects fled. One suspect was arrested at the scene, and a loaded firearm was recovered. The other two suspects managed to escape.
Expanding the Investigation
The incident unraveled a larger criminal network actively planning similar crimes. York Regional Police worked with Peel Regional Police and Toronto Police Service, executing 48 search warrants during the investigation. The operation uncovered significant evidence, including:
-
Firearms: Two handguns and one shotgun.
-
Drugs: Cocaine, ketamine, methamphetamine, and hundreds of bottles of pills intended to be sold as Oxycodone, with a street value exceeding $14 million.
Charges and Arrests
The 17 suspects face a combined total of 83 charges, including offenses related to violent crime and drug trafficking. Among those arrested, six were already on bail or other forms of release, four were bound by weapons prohibition orders, and one suspect had accessed Ministry of Transportation databanks to assist the criminal network.
Statements from Authorities
Deputy Chief Alvaro Almeida emphasized the importance of combating organized crime: “York Regional Police will not tolerate armed criminals violating the sanctity of homes in our community.” Police Chief Jim MacSween praised investigators for their dedication to dismantling the complex network.
Ontario’s Solicitor General Michael Kerzner highlighted government support for such initiatives: “Our government is proud to support our police officers in getting guns and drugs off our streets. Public safety remains our priority morning, noon, and night.”
Community Impact
Project Skyfall underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies to address organized crime and ensure public safety. The successful operation has disrupted a dangerous criminal network while recovering significant quantities of illegal drugs and firearms.
